The Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis Ebmatingen, built in 1989, is emission-free after the energy renovation in 2018/19. Thanks to significantly improved roof insulation, a solar-powered geothermal heat pump, the use of solar heat with 161 m2 of photovoltaic thermal modules and the economical LED lighting, the previous total energy requirement was reduced by around 35%. The old oil heating system was torn out, saving 7,000 liters of heating oil annually and avoiding 21 t of CO2 emissions per year. The lighthouse project was awarded both the Swiss and the European Solar Prize 2019.
